Some thought about my work on a 25-story office building facade in Queens, New York. Using Grasshopper’s ImageAY, I created a dynamic design that changes colors and patterns based on the viewer’s angle, inspired by collectible card animations.

I’ve been appointed to design the facade system for a 25-story office building in Queens, New York recently. The client wishes to retain the primary white color of the building while incorporating additional colors and patterns into the facade system.

The lower section of the building features a perforated panel facade system with panels measuring 40cm wide by 80cm high. The upper section comprises a louvered shading system arranged in groups of four, positioned horizontally. The challenge in adding color and patterns to this combination lies in the fact that the upper facade elements are smaller and narrower than those below, potentially creating a top-heavy appearance. Additionally, the narrow louvers make patterns less noticeable.

During the design process, I used Grasshopper’s ImageAY to assist in visualizing images on the facade. To ensure each panel has a single color and the total number of colors remains nine, my script extracts the light and dark areas from an image and mosaics it based on the different sizes of the facade elements, assigning new, specified colors and their nine transitions. Ash simplifies baking these assigned models into the visualizations.

Thanks to the support from the client and the team, these ideas are progressing towards the final design. I will continue to post updates on this project in this column.
