Expanding the Narrative

Coffee Fable 3.0 extends the story introduced in Coffee Fable 2.0, transforming the satirical tale into a tangible architectural model that captures the full scale of the underground coffee palace. This model not only visualizes the narrative elements but also deepens the critique of the global coffee industry. The massive coffee roasting factory, brewing facilities, and washing boilers, all depicted in the narrative, are meticulously brought to life. Visitors can imagine walking through the areas where elaborate coffee performances are staged, with every detail designed to exaggerate and satirize the grandeur associated with Western coffee culture.

 

The Hidden Layers

Beneath this extravagant world lies a darker reality—the hidden system that transports coffee beans from the Global South. This underground network serves as a reminder of the environmental and social costs that underpin the global coffee trade. The model reveals the stark contrast between the opulence above and the exploitation below, challenging viewers to consider the often-ignored consequences of their daily cup of coffee. The grand 18th-century-style palace that crowns this complex is no less ironic; crafted by large 3D architectural printers using coffee grounds as material, it proudly declares its sustainability while embodying the excess and contradictions of modern consumer culture.

 

Situated within Melbourne’s Fitzroy neighborhood, the coffee palace is designed to integrate seamlessly with the local community, which prides itself on its vibrant coffee culture. The model places this extravagant structure in direct dialogue with its surroundings, highlighting the tension between cultural pride and the environmental and social impacts of the coffee industry. This satirical design not only critiques but also celebrates the community’s deep connection to coffee, urging a reflection on what this culture truly represents.

 

Exhibition Style

In presenting this project, a unique display style was employed, using a high-contrast black-and-white sculptural texture. The complex of above-ground and underground palace elements is sliced into different-sized blocks in a true axonometric view, allowing readers to follow the narrative’s flow and uncover the hidden details within the design.
